Russia as the Global Stage Country and its Prospect of Relations with Indonesia

In order to reach World Class University, the Department of International Relations in Diponegoro University held an International Webinar with the theme “Russia’s Position In The Global Stage And Prospect Of Relations With Indonesia” on Monday, November 23, 2020. This theme was also taken to commemorate the 70th years diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Russia. This event was attended by HE Lyudmila Georgievna Vorobieva (Russian Ambassador to Indonesia) and Vitaly Aleksandrovich Glinkin (Director of the Russian Cultural Center) as the speakers, while the participants were Marten Hanura, MPS (Secretary of the International Relations Study Program).

The representative from the Rector of Diponegoro University by Prof. Budi Setiyono, Ph.D opened the event, saying that Russia as one of the big countries in the world can collaborate with Indonesia, in which it is a rising power in Asia. Especially with Undip that is one of the big universities in Indonesia to be able to develop cooperation in the fields of teaching, research and student exchange.

Marten Hanura, MPS (secretary of the International Relations study program) stated that Russia is one of the countries that has many roles in the global stage both in international organizations such as the United Nations, WTO, APEC, G8 and regional organizations and also contributes to handling Covid 19. Marten asked the guest speaker whether Russia wants to restore domination as a super power like it was before 1990 and what is the importance of Indonesia to Russia.

HE Lyudmila Georgievna Vorobieva (Russian Ambassador to Indonesia) Russia said that in foreign policy it does not pursue a super power because this concept makes a dominant country in the whole world, but in foreign policy, Russia supports multilateralism in which the large and small countries have an equal position and they have the right to respect their national interests.

Russia also developed inclusive security that the security of a country is not determined by other countries. Meanwhile, Indonesia is very important for Russia as a key partner not only in Southeast Asia but also in Asia Pacific because Indonesia has a considerable influence in the region.

Vitaly Aleksandrovich Glinkin (Director of the Russian Cultural Center) said that the Russian Cultural Center as one of the Russian institutions in Indonesia has a mission for cooperation in the fields of humanity, research, education and culture with the Indonesian government which aims to better understand each other between the two countries in order to increase further cooperation. many more in various fields.

Apart from the discussion, the webinar on the sidelines of this event also featured cultural performances by Indonesian Students in Russia (Permira) in collaboration with Russian students by singing the song “Rayuan Pulau Kelapa” which also translated into the Russian entitled “Ostrova Palm” and reading Russian poetry.
